After the success of “Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter,” directed by Joseph Zito, the series defied the that title and continued the series witch lead to both good (Part 6) and bad (parts 7, 8 and “Jason Goes Hell”) results. One of the less favorable entrees is “Friday the 13th part 5: A New Beginning.”
“A New Beginning” continues the story of Tommy Jarvis (this time played by John Shepherd, replacing Corey Feldman from “The Final Chapter”). Jarvis is sent to Pinehurst Halfway House to recover from the mental damage from killing Jason Voorhees.
While at Pinehurst, a fellow resident Joey Burns is killed by another resident Victor J. Faden. After this Roy Burns (Joey’s father) takes his revenge against the members of Pinehurst by dressing up as Jason and killing the people of Crystal Lake.
“Friday the 13th part 5: A New Beginning” is in my opinion an over hated film. No doubt a step down from “The Final Chapter,” but no better or worse than parts 2 or 3. While I understand why you might dislike this entry, I don’t think it deserves the hate it gets.
My main gripe with this film is the fact that Roy is way too good at being Jason with him getting hurt in ways that should kill him, but he just gets up again in the way ONLY Jason should be able to.
Overall I think “A New Beginning” is more of an pretty good/OK movie rather than a completely good or bad film, with some minor story issues, overall decent kills, and setting up unused story elements.
It succeeds at being a good slasher film and is fairly on par with previous entries.
