One of Duncan Middle School’s clubs, NJHS, has some student officers. They recently attended a conference in Norman Oklahoma on April 2, 2024. At the beginning of the day, they opened the conference by having the Native Americans do their cultural dance for all the students and sponsors. After that, all the students/officers from other schools were introduced to Moore Middle School.
Berkley Morris, an 8th-grade student who attended the NJHS conference said, “My favorite part about the conference was meeting new people. It is important to meet new people because the type of people that you meet you will likely see in leadership rules. From the conference, we learned what citizenship, leadership, and service were. The conference was beneficial because it helps NJHS officers be better leaders and it gives us experience on how to work well with others.”
Delayna Holthaus, another 8th-grade student who attended the conference said, “At the conference, I really enjoyed meeting new people. I learned good leadership skills and good ways to be the best that I can be. The NJHS conference was beneficial because it taught me good life skills.”
This year the conference president was Moore, which is why they introduced themselves and talked about what the benefits the conference holds and how the students can take it back to their school. When the speakers finished talking, all the different school officers went to their assigned breakouts. Every breakout was about how they could be better leaders to other people and their upcoming peers and how they can benefit our schools in many ways by volunteering for many things and having more things in the community. There also were social learning opportunities so they could not only make people feel involved but also the whole school environment.
Sally Wheeler, the assistant sponsor, said, “My favorite part of the conference was getting to hang out with our officers and get to know them better. It was good for team building.”
