Now that state testing is done and everyone’s schedule is back to normal, the students of DMS are on the final stretch for summer break. Students are starting to not show up and others are still attending, so it leads to the question, what is the point of coming to school if state testing is done?
10 students were asked this question, and it was a 50/50 split between yes and no. The ones who said yes mainly said the reason behind it is because their teachers were still assigning work to them so there is still a reason to go. The ones who said no mainly talked about how everything has been taught and that’s mainly now busy work.
Raleigh Waugh, A STEM student at DMS, said now that state testing is over, she is working on her shed. Waugh also says that they want to spend time on their art to get better at it and just overall enjoy it.
Breken Condit, one of the 6th-grade students in gymnastics, says they are still learning about new stuff even after state testing and plans to do sports, mainly basketball, over summer break.
Condit did also say that he feels like he’s doing less work than normal after state testing, and feels like English is giving the least because what they’re doing is reading out of their reading book. He had also said that they should teach more subjects for next year instead of the same stuff.
Mason King, a 7th-grade student, said, “There is a point in going to school even after state testing because the more you learn about something the better you get at it.” King also stated that during summer break he will watch TikTok and eat food during it. He also feels like, “There is too much busy work for it being the end of the school year, and Miss Barker has been giving too much work.”
Many mixed thoughts of post-testing are shown between grades, some say they get too much work and others say they aren’t doing anything. Many people are getting different sights of this and it makes some excited for summer break.
