A Duncan Middle School teacher was recently won the Oklahoma Educators Credit Union Backpack Award.
Representatives from the Oklahoma Educators Credit Union awarded the backpack to Sonia Norton, a special education teacher at DMS, during a morning assembly on Wednesday.
According to a July 12 post on the Oklahoma Educators Credit Union’s Facebook page, “OECU, S&S Textiles, and Okieprint are teaming up to make the Teacher Back to School Backpack Giveaway better than ever! Nominate your favorite teacher or teacher coworker to win a backpack full of classroom teacher supplies!”
Teachers from across the state were able to apply for the Backpack Award during the month of July. Norton received an email from the credit union asking for more CU members to enter the contest. The contest was also shared on the credit union’s Facebook page.
The contest went from July 1 to 26, according to the credit union’s Facebook page.
On Monday, Norton received notification that she was one of the recipients to receive a backpack from the entries received. She said the notice was welcome news this school year.
“Winning the award was very exciting because I got a big backpack full of school supplies to use for my classroom and students,” Norton said.
Aside from the backpack award program, the Oklahoma Educators Credit Union is also known for its grant program, where Oklahoma teachers can apply for funding to purchase classroom supplies or to fulfill classroom projects. To apply for a grant, teachers have to be members of the credit union and submit the application, similarly to how they had to apply for the backpack award.
Norton happened to be one of the select applicants to receive a backpack statewide.
According to another post on the credit union’s Facebook page from July 9, “We will be giving away 160 backpacks filled with school supplies, such as notebooks, erasers, highlighters, and more! (Approx. $150 value each).”
