Editor’s Note: This is the third and final story in a series about state OCCT testing. Stories were written by Duncan Middle School journalism students.
With OCCT state tests still months away, Duncan Middle School students reflect on the necessity for state testing.
Seventh-graders Adelina Pizana and Brooklyn Villarreal said they think state testing is useful because it show if students have made progress in their learning.
This year’s testing will see changes, including an absence of a social studies test and the ability to use calculators on the math test.
Hayley Cruz, sixth grade, said she was glad there won’t be a social studies test because she thinks that subject, along with science, are areas students tend to struggle. Cruz said she thinks there should be me focus on teaching social studies.
Pizana and Villarreal said they prefer using computers instead of ScanTrons for state testing because they are easier to use and seem to be less confusing when it comes to questions.
Cruz said she is happy and excited to use computers this year for testing.
State testing is slated for April.
