National Junior Honor Society is preparing to elect its next slate of officers, and 14 NJHS seventh-graders are hoping to fill the six positions.
Election for the seventh-grade NJHS officers will take place during the Oct. 1 NJHS meeting, with all eligible members able to vote. Candidates with the highest number of votes will be elected to the positions, which include president-elect, vice-president-elect, secretary-elect, treasurer-elect, reporter-elect and parliamentarian-elect. Candidates had to submit their candidate filing by Sept. 13.
The newly elected officers will shadow the eighth-grade officers throughout the school year before officially taking over at the end of the school year.
Those who filed for president-elect include Walker Leonard, Carleigh Nalley and Parker Sanders.
Leonard said his is excited about running for the president position.
“Becoming president felt like something that spoke to me,” he said. “I think it will be fun and helpful.” When asked why he wanted his role, he said, “Because being president was something that spoke to me.”
He said his goal through NJHS is to help the school.
Nalley had similar thoughts about the NJHS presidency.
If I had a chance, I wouldn’t switch my role for another,” Nalley said. ““When (current NJHS president) Peyton (Williams) tried out for it I was interested it and wanted to see what it was about.”
Sanders said he is ready for the election and hopes to secure the president’s position.
“It’s the best role you can have,” he said. “I wanted to run for president for a while.”
He said he thinks the position is important because of the impact it can make on other students.
“I like to be able to teach and lead by example,” Sanders said. “I want to promote a safe learning environment.”
He said his goal in NJHS is to win president and lead Duncan Middle School through this school year and next.
“I think I would be able to focus on achieving the main goals Duncan has,” Sanders said.
