The Academic Team at DMS is currently allowing people to sign up and try out.
Sally Wheeler is the head coach of the Academic Team.
“First we are in the process of tryouts and also getting more people to join for Academics,” Wheeler said.
Her biggest goal for Academics is to win and hopefully make it to state because it’ll be good for DMS and the team.
Currently, Wheeler doesn’t know how many meets the team will have because it depends on the number of people who join. She does not know when the first meet is going to happen but the process of figuring it out is underway.
She also mentioned doing online competitions and how it would benefit the team in many ways. No one knows when their first meeting, but it should be soon. Tryouts have not been planned yet either.
Cannon Atchley, an Academic Team member, has been on the team since last year and is eager to start the season.
“The thing I’m most excited for is skipping school, winning and hopefully getting a scholarship,” Atchley said.
He said it’s important to believe in yourself whenever you’re in a competition.
“You can do it,” Atchley said.
Parker Sanders, another Academic Team Member, has also been on the academic team since last year.
“Don’t memorize something you can look up later,” Sanders said, providing tricks of the trade.
Both Atchley and Sanders had talked about camp and how well they did at the first one. They didn’t attended the second one.
Both have learned that they should be more focused because they’d like to win more.
Their goals for academics are to go and win state. The most important thing they want to achieve in academics is to gain scholarships.
People currently a part of academics are JD Gdanksi, Huck Petersen, Kayan Patel, Atchley and Sanders.
