Duncan Middle School cheerleaders competed in a cheer competition in Washington, Oklahoma.
The DMS cheer squad competed against multiple teams from schools across the state, as they all converged on Washington. The competition took place Nov. 2.
Collins Budowsky, who is on the DMS cheer team, said the Washington competition was important for the competitive season, but the most important cheer event of the season took place in Altus.
Although DMS didn’t place first in either competition, Budowsky said it was fun competing. She placed fifth in the Washington cheer competition.
She has been a cheerleader for seven years before this competition. She said there are a lot of things she enjoys about cheerleading including doing flips and tumbling.
Budowsky said cheer can be challenging, but isn’t overly hard. She said the most difficult parts are having to condition a lot and having the strength to do it.
“If you believe you’ll win, you will,” she said.
She said she thinks the cheer team will have a good season because they have had a good season so far and have improved. She said the team did well during the competition by showcasing good teamwork.
Budowsky was hopeful the team would win because they had motivation from their coaches and said the coaches were happy with their performance. The team improved from last year.
She finds the game day routines the hardest for her because of the three different sections.
Emma Lopez, another DMS cheerleader, had similar thoughts.
Lopez said she plans to get first in one of the cheer competitions eventually.
Having been a cheerleader for six years, she finds cheer easy and enjoyable. She said cheer and competitions are easier the longer you’ve done it.
Although she doesn’t have a favorite routine, she like’s the team’s “YMCA” routine.
Like Budowsky, Lopez got fifth place in the competition, but will continue to set her sights on improving.
“Never give up,” she said.
