After the poor reception of “Friday the 13th part 5: A New Beginning,” the studio needed to bring the franchise back to form by bringing back one of horror’s most iconic villains, Jason Voorhees.
“Friday the 13th part 6: Jason Lives,” written and directed by Tom Mcloughlin, continues the story of Tommy Jarvis as he attempts to destroy Jason’s body to prevent him from returning from the dead. However, Tommy accidentally resurrects Jason and has to kill him, again.
Jason Lives is considered by many “Friday the 13th” fans as the best in the series with the film having more humor than the franchise’s previous entries, such as Jason ripping a guy’s arm off and killing paint ballers wearing “dead” bandanas.
The film also has many references to other films such as having a little girl named Nancy who has nightmares, a clear reference to Nancy Thompson from “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”
I think the film is one of the better films in the “Friday the 13th” franchise. In fact I think it’s the best entry and maybe even my favorite slasher movie
I think that jokes are a nice change in tone for the movies, and the film’s opening with Jason getting resurrected Frankenstein style and then going into a James Bond style intro makes for one of my favorite movie openings I have ever seen.
Overall, I love “Jason Lives,” but I think it’s the last normal “Friday” film with almost every other film after this doing something weird, like sending Jason to New York (“Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan“) or space (“Jason X“).
Side note: I found “Jason Takes Manhattan” OK, having skipped Part 7, but it’s still the worst of the “Friday” movies I have seen. I haven’t seen “Jason X” yet, but I have heard decent things about it.
