Editor note: ISI the in-school intervention program at Duncan Middle School. One journalism student found herself in ISI, and wrote about the experience. Here are her thoughts and observations about the program.
ISI is not fun at all.
I have been in ISI for two days, and so far I don’t mind it. But it’s just not a place you want to be. Coach Jamar Lockhart is serious about what he does.
The rules are very strict and apply to all students who attend ISI. If you don’t know what ISI stands for, it is In School Intervention.
The rules include 1) Enter/Exit quietly, 2) No talking, 3) No sleeping, 4) Complete all assigned work, 5) No cell phones/electronics. These rules also include no after-school activities involved with school programs. You also may not attend any of the football games, assembles, field trips, contest, co-op programs while in ISI.
Students who do not follow these rules/expectation of the ISI program will be subjected to further disciplinary actions. If the student’s behavior warrants more disciplinary action, such as out-of-school suspension, that student will serve that time and complete the ISI assignments upon their return of school.
Also if you are late without a really good excuse, then you will be assign with more days of ISI . if you continue with an attitude, you will be given out-of-school suspension.
From my experience, I have had no attitude, and I have completed all my assignments with no arguing. I have given nothing but respect and no attitude.
I will not be in ISI again for sure. I have learned not to be disrespectful to anybody.
ISI is just not a place for anybody to be.
