Duncan Middle School will soon be choosing its Student Council officers for the upcoming school year.
Elections for the Duncan Middle School Student Council are scheduled for Friday. Campaign speeches will take place at 7:30 a.m. Friday with voting taking place by noon.
Those running for officer positions include President, Huck Petersen; Vice President, Bella Christian; Secretary, Brooklyn Richards; Treasurer, Jaylee Hornbeak; and Reporter/Historian, Case Howell and Delaney Ward.
Zara Ozaltin, the current Student Council president, said a good Student Council officers needs to be someone who helps the community.
“(Some qualities they need include) being strong, having a positive mindset, being respectful and taking responsibility,” Ozaltin said.
She said has enjoyed being president of the organization this year.
“I thought it would be fun, and I love to help and be a leader,” Ozaltin said.
She is one of five officers representing Student Council this year. Other officers include Vice President Collins Budowsky, Secretary Kaylee Thomas, Treasurer Peyton Williams and Reporter/Historian Tenley Robinson.
Budowsky also had thoughts about what makes a good leader. She said some qualities a Student Council officer needs include strong leadership and determination.
“Someone who can lead and had a desire to make a change,” she said.
Budowsky said she chose to be an officer for several reasons.
“I think that it was fun and cool, and I got to do new things that I wouldn’t be able to do if I wasn’t in Student Council,” she said. “I saw things I wanted to change, and as an officer, I could make those changes.”
Williams also felt drawn to being an officer because of the impact she could make on Duncan Middle School.
“So I could represent my school and learn leadership skills I might use in the future,” she said.
Williams said qualities of a good officer include teamwork, leadership, listening skills and communication skills.
“An officer is someone who fulfills a position to represent your school,” she said.
