Those little buses that have your friends names on them, that are in the window of the cafeteria, have a heavy purpose.
They help very unfortunate people, who have been a victim to an unfortunate disaster, that could not be stopped. So that’s why there are little buses in the window of the cafeteria, so Duncan Middle School can help them.
Hurricane Harvey was pretty big, and it did cause a lot of damage. But DMS doesn’t help just because of that; it also helps because DMS cares and because some students and staff members might have family, friends or other loved ones, down in Houston, Texas. The school raises money by selling little paper buses and you put your name on it and then they put a little tape on it and tape it up in the cafeteria window.
Sherry McGhghy, Title I teacher, is one of the proud people who go around the cafeteria to sell little sticky buses to the student body for a dollar. The buses are aimed at students, but the teachers by them, too.
“It is an amazing thing we’re doing, I just wish we could do more,” said McGhghy. She also said that One hundred percent of the money goes to an organization called Donors Choose. Donors Choose is a website where you donate money to teachers for school supplies and learning utensils. The money goes toward other things like educational field trips and things like that.
This website is for teachers only, it was even started by a history teacher. Their mission is to make it easy for anyone who teaches in a classroom to get the financial help they need for their students to learn everything they need to know, for life. You can even create your own if you are a teacher and you can get money for your school. The classes DMS donates to are the ones that profit schools in Houston, because they are the schools who likely need it the most right now.
McGhghy said the money will go to the schools of Hurricane Harvey, to help students keep learning. Buy a bus, and you will pay for so much more, an education, a memorable learning experience. A good education can change a lot of lives for the better.
