Duncan Middle School should not have STEM as an elective for sixth grade students, instead it should be used as their science class, like seventh and eighth grade.
STEM should be all grades science class, because, it would teach students about what they will be learning the next year if they get into the class.
Instead of taking their grade science class, which is still a good class, the students could be learning more. Pre-algebra is the sixth graders’ math class, instead of a regular one.
Why?
In the school year of 2015-16 Duncan Middle School received a D with a score of 66. The math standard received a D, while the science standard received an F. Now this could go into why our school had a D and how the other middle schools in Stephens county had higher grades than us.
Fifty percent of our grades are based off the students performance. Do the students need better learning, or better listening?
This all goes back to my point, sixth graders would succeed more and students would get more advanced grades if they got to have STEM as their science class. We have amazing science teachers, but some students may be more advanced than the average student, so they can learn the extra curriculum.
The seventh and eighth grade get two electives with the opportunity to have an advanced science class. Sixth graders should too.
