The flu is taking over the Duncan Middle School.
About 125 students are out as of today. This doesn’t mean everyone who is absent has the flu, but the majority of people do have the flu. Even 10 of the DMS staff members are out sick.
There is no set percentage of student has been given in order for the school to shut down. Other schools around Duncan, such as Empire and Walters, have shut down to sanitize after reaching a 2o percent absentee rate.
This is affecting the school by increasing the number of absences. There has already been a substitute shortage and the flu outbreak is not helping.
“In general, just not everyone is feeling 100 percent,” Assistant Principal Lisha Elroy said.
To keep the flu levels low, students should make sure they’re washing their hands, cough or sneeze into their elbow, and make sure to stay at home if they’re sick so they don’t infect others.
