What are the students opinions about the teacher walkout?
Crystal Gomez, a student at Duncan Middle School, said, “ I think that the teachers should walk out because school books are outdated. And there are certain things that teachers have to teach and its not in the book or even in order because the books are so outdated.”
Gomez said one example of the need for more funds is the OCCT practice booklets.
“Even the OCCT practice booklets were made in 2006, and they are in bad condition. And we can’t even write in them,” Gomez said.
She said she doesn’t know how long the walk out will last, but if the walkout does last more than nine days she thinks the school should add hours to their days, mainly Fridays.
Jaedyn Harvey, another student at Duncan Middle School, had her own opinions about the walkout.
Harvey said, “I think the teachers should walk out because it is not fair that our school budgets, teacher pay and education funds are so little, and the funds keep getting cut in half.
“I don’t think it is right that when the state needs money they take it from school/education funds.”
Many school districts in Oklahoma, including Duncan will be closed Monday and could possibly be closed longer. Duncan Schools will be closed Monday to allow teachers to attend a rally at the Capitol. Duncan teachers will be meeting after school today to discuss the walkout and what the school district will do.
