The Demon Direct staff and Boy Scout Troop 4434 will be working together to clean up the DMS garden.
A cleanup day is set for 3:05 p.m. Oct. 9, at the garden. Students, parents and teachers not involved in either organization are able to volunteer in the cleanup effort and should meet at the garden at cleanup time.
“This is a great opportunity to give back to our school and to save the garden,” Derrick Miller, newspaper teacher, said. “Many of my students have helped with the garden in the past, and they were excited to be able to bring it back to its former glory.”
The previous caretaker of the garden was sixth-grade science teacher Jeanna Russell, who retired at the end of the 2017-18 school year. Russell’s students used the garden as an outdoor classroom and gave the students a way to go outside during the school day.
Some of the students hold onto those memories.
“I believe that we should keep the garden clean,” Jaden Waid, eighth-grade newspaper staff member, said. “It really gives students a good reason to keep the Earth clean.”
