On Oct. 31, Duncan Middle School had an assembly for Red Ribbon Week, designed to promote a drug-free lifestyle.
Eighth-grade students Kenzie Beck and Tag Ensey opened the assembly by talking about the types of drugs and drug problems. Beck is the Students Council president, and Ensey is the National Junior Honor Society president.
Shortly after, cheerleaders performed a dance to a song called “Mickey” by Toni Basil. They also performed a few stunts during their presentation.
Gaby Rubio and Kadence Hendricks sang “Scars to Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara.
One of the moments that brought tears to students’ eyes was Amie Moore, seventh-grade English teacher, sharing her personal story and photos related to drug awareness. Moore talked about her oldest son, Harrison, and his drug troubles, which started with marijuana in middle school.
Afterward, the Duncna High School drama students performed a short play titled “the Empty Chair” by Tim Kelly.
In closing the assembly, Principal Rodney Strutton said he knew there were a lot of student concerns when it came to drugs, whether someone in their household or in their friend group. Strutton said the administration, counselors and teachers are willing to listen and help.
“We will find someone for you,” he said.
