Some eighth-grade students don’t think the OCCT testing should dictate whether a student gets retained for the next school year.
Anna Hutto and Jose Gonzalez are two such students.
Hutto and Gonzalez said they don’t think teachers should be able to hold students back because a teacher may be bias toward students by either passing the ones they like or retaining those they don’t.
“We should have to take a test every year because if we do not take the big test the end of the year then we might have to take more during the next year so that the teachers can see were we are and what we need to be taught,” Hutto said.
Although students aren’t retained based on OCCT testing, students who do not pass the eighth-grade writing test may not get their driver’s licenses for a while after turning 16.
Gonzalez said that being retained is a fear for some students.
“Everybody should be able to pass the eighth grade because people should not get held back because of a test,” Gonazalez said. “Some people are not as good of test takers as some other people.”
Neither thinks they are in danger of being retained.
Hutto said she’s “really smart” and knows what she’s doing.
