Six Duncan Middle School students had their art work selected for the Junior Young Talent in Oklahoma (JrYTIO) Art Show in Stillwater.
Of the more than 300 entries accepted into the art show, eight were from Duncan Middle School. DMS art teacher Melissa Mayo said a total of 17 entries were submitted to JrYTIO.
The show started March 2 and will continue until April 6. Works were accepted for students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades., and submitted art could include 2D color and mixed media, 2D values and 3D art of any type.
Eighth-graders JJ Gregston and Natalie Waters were two of the students who had their art selected into the Stillwater art exhibit. Waters submitted a parody work of the famous painting Grant Wood’s “American Gothic.” Gregston made a clay macaroon.
Waters said this is her second year in art, which she chose over choir. This is Gregston’s first year in art, which she said she wanted to try.
Both plan to be involved in art in high school.
They said they enjoy art because it’s fun and gives students an opportunity to meet cool people in class. It also gives them an opportunity to make messes without getting yelled at.
A closing reception for the art show is set for 1 to 5 p.m. April 6 at the Prairie Arts Center, and student artists will be able to pick up their works after that time.
