On May 9, the Duncan Middle School announced the newly elected student council officers for the 2019-20 school year.
Those elected to the positions were Ka’ziya Ciner, president; Emersen Villagrana, vice president; Ansley DeVoe, secretary; Allison Bailey, treasurer; and Callen Villagrana, reporter.
Each of the officer candidates gave a speech to sixth and seventh-grade students. Those students then voted on who they felt would be the best for the given positions.
Criner was one of three people vying for the top position, facing opposition from Ainsley McEntire and Emaree Rosado.
“It’s pretty great to win, and I was nervous, but now I’m excited,” Criner said.
The president office was the only position to have three people campaign for it.
Callen Villagrana was up against Jacob Early for the job of reporter. Both even mentioned being in journalism at Duncan Middle School this year, which they said would make them more knowledge and adept for the position.
“I’m excited to help,” Callen Villagrana said after winning.
Each of the newly elected officers said they’re excited to be a part of the organization and are ready to get started.
Bailey said she thinks she has what it takes to do a good job as treasurer.
“I love money so I have all the clout, and I have what it takes to be good,” she said.
The ceremonial passing of the spirit stick will take place during Tuesday’s awards assembly.
