All Duncan Middle School classrooms are creating book displays in celebration of Black History Month in hopes of opening conversations between teachers and students on the subject.
In humanities, students are watching “Roots.” But the discussions stretch to other classes, too.
Black History Month runs throughout the month of February.
Reyna Murillo, a sixth-grade student, said Black History Month is significant for all Americans.
“I think Black History Month is important because we need to realize and understand how mistreated African Americans were,” Murillo said.
She said the contributions of black Americans have played a large part in American history.
Brendan Heilman, another sixth-grader, said Black History Month is important because it recognizes the pain and suffering black people went through in American history.
A Black History Month speech is expected to be presented Thursday morning.
