Toward the end of seventh hour today, Principal Rodney Strutton made the announcement that Duncan Public Schools would not have classes Wednesday.
Following the announcement, several classes throughout DMS rejoiced, with students cheering and throwing up their hands. But the excitement was shared by many teachers throughout the building, too.
“We’re closing because the potential of bad weather is so great, and it is helpful to let parents know as soon as possible so they can make plans for their kids,” Strutton said.
This is the first snow day of the 2019-20 school year. During the previous school year, the first snow day took place on what was supposed to be the first day back from Christmas Break, leading to an extended break.
Strutton said that Duncan is one of several school districts in Southwest Oklahoma to cancel school for Wednesday. Empire, Bray-Doyle and Wichita Falls, Texas, are among the schools that have already closed for the weather. More schools in Stephens County are likely to cancel.
“We will not be making the day up,” Strutton said. “We have built in days that will allow us to have bad weather days. Most of the districts in our area are being closed.”
According to the National Weather Service website, Duncan is expected to receive snow starting around 10 p.m. tonight. The National Weather Service site also show a prediction of between 6 and 8 inches of snow, which is among the heaviest expected snowfall in Southwest Oklahoma.
The announcement of the cancellation was also shared on various social media platforms for Duncan Public Schools, Duncan Middle School and other Duncan schools. DMS’s post went live about 20 minutes before the school day ended.
Additionally, practices for all sports were canceled with the closing of school Wednesday.
