In the past years at Duncan Middle School, students got the choose their electives that they want for the upcoming year. This year is a much different story.
The counselors worked with the Assistant Principal Tim Hightower to put students into electives for the 2020-21 school year. Once students got their schedules they had the chance to change their schedule to classes that they wanted.
But with more than 700 kids in the school , it was difficult. They had to really think about the students they are putting in each class and how it would effect each class.
The students are allowed to change schedules at the beginning of second semester if the classes they had in the first semester did’t go as planned.
Gabriel Houser said the lack of selecting electives didn’t bother him.
“I don’t mind,” Houser said. “I like all the classes I got.”
He said he doesn’t want to change his schedules because he has friends in all of his classes.
While the inability to switch classes might cause some stress, others find they like the way things are.
Some electives, such as band and choir, were able to pre-select students for their classes, including honor choir, allowing some students to get an idea of at least one elective they would have in advance.
