Editor’s Note: This is the fourth part of an ongoing series to introduce new teachers at Duncan Middle School.
Amara Smith is hoping for the best possible outcome this school year, especially when it comes to students staying with in-person instruction.
Smith is a new seventh-grade English teacher at Duncan Middle School.
Before coming to DMS, Smith taught at Freedom Elementary School at Fort Sill. This current school year is her fourth year of teaching. She has taught grades in elementary, but she has also taught pre-kindergarten children, too.
She’s enjoying the current school year and is glad to be back at school. She said she loves how excited the kids are to be back after the long break, which was a result of COVID-19.
She said the students have a great attitude for being back at school, despite discomfort related the masks. She’s praying for school to stay in session instead of having to go fully online. Although she’s prepared to go virtual if needed, she’s hoping things won’t get to that point.
In addition to joining the DMS staff, Smith went on her maternity leave Wednesday and later that night delivered a baby girl named Allie.
Smith said she’s sad to leave her students for an extended period, but she’s excited about her new baby.
