Duncan Middle School students will vote on Student Council officers Friday, following the virtual speeches.
With school moving to distance learning in March, the Student Council election got postponed until this semester. But with continuing concerns about COVID-19, the election got delayed again.
Posters were placed in the hallways several weeks ago to promote the election and the candidates.
Students running for Student Council president are Brady Earsom, Dylan Hardy and Ava Johnson. Other people running for officer positions include Amiya Williams for vice president, Vivian Albin for treasurer, Kierany Holthaus for reporter, and Kenzi Sherill and Aubrie Stratton for secretary.
“I feel good about it,” Johnson said about the election. “I’m nervous that I’m not going to get it, but I’m ready to lead the school in a new direction with new programs to accumulate.”
Hardy had similar thoughts about the election.
“I am very excited, and I am excited for the people I might get to work with, but if I don’t I will be a good sport,” he said. “I would want to see that in the other candidates.”
Earsom said he felt that running for Student Council president was important, especially considering the current school year.
“I know this year is tough and may get tougher, but together we can get through this,” he said.
In addition to the president position, another Student Council office with more than one candidate is secretary.
Stratton said her choice for running to Student Council was to be involved in the process of imoproving the school.
“I am running for secretary because I want to make the school better,” she said. “I can try as hard as I can to make the school better by myself, but I will definitely need help from the other Student Council members to make it the best.”
Sherrill said school improvement was also high on her reasons for running for Student Council.
“I want to help the school and be more involved,” she said.
The candidate speeches are being video recorded. Those videos will be shown during WIN class on Friday. Following the speeches, all students will get the opportunity to vote for the student council officers.
