The other day, my sister got braces. So, I told her to read book called “Smile.”
It was a book I read when I was about her age and was going through braces, too. It’s a graphic novel by Raina Telgemeier, who also wrote “Drama,” which I reviewed a few weeks ago.
The book is about a girl ironically named Raina. She was running home from Girl Scouts one night and tripped, fell and knocked her two front teeth out. When she realized what happened, she looked and looked for her two teeth.
Her friend, who saw the whole thing, found one tooth, but they never found the other one.
When she got inside, her mom called the dentist. He said to put the tooth in milk and bring her and her tooth to his office.
Now you need to understand that it is night time at this point. When she arrived at the dentist, he realized that the other tooth had been pushed up into her gums. He gave Raina some laughing gas and pulled out the tooth.
When she woke up, she was in her own bed, and it was morning. She realized she had a cast around her top teeth. Her mom said it was to make sure the teeth did not move around much.
When the cast came off the next week, her teeth had grown up into her gums and made her front two teeth half their normal size. So, she had to get a root canal to fix it.
Once that was fixed, she got braces and HEADGEAR. She was super sad about that, but she made it through OK.
She ended p having to get her two front teeth removed, and she got two fake teeth instead. But as her braces started to move her teeth, closer, the two front take teeth got shaved down smaller and smaller and smaller until there was just one fake tooth.
And then there were none, and her teeth were all the way fixed.
She had a beautiful smile.
I really hope my sister agrees to reading this book because I think it will help pass some time and help her look on the bright side of things.
