The National Junior Honor Society canned food drive started Monday.
There is a need for canned food items this year because of ongoing complications with COVID-19. Christians Concerns pantry needs a boost before entering the holiday season.
Least year, at least 800 cans were donated by NJHS and Duncan Middle School students. NJHS students who donate five cans earn one service point for the semester.
“We are going to be doing the canned food drive to donated canned goods to those in need,” NJHS sponsor Amber Molina said. “Any canned food is acceptable.”
The canned food drive will last until Oct. 30, giving students three weeks to donate food items.
Derrick Miller, NJHS sponsor, said the canned food drive is representative of what NJHS is all about.
“I think NJHS represents helping others, and Christians Concern is always helping people and are always in need,” Miller said.
This year, the goal is to improve upon last year’s collection total.
Isaac Pain, NJHS reporter, said the canned food drive is a worthy cause.
“Yes, I’m donating some cans,” Pain said.
The first cans were donated Monday with more expected in the coming weeks.
