This Friday is the start of Red Ribbon Week at Duncan Middle School.
Red Ribbon Week is the national drug-free awareness week. This week can spread awareness to students and community members to strive to be drug free.
Each year, Red Ribbon week stretches from Oct. 23 through the 31.
For Red Ribbon Week this year, students will be dressing up to celebrate and spread awareness for six school days. The full celebration lasts for nine total days.
This year at DMS, the National Junior Honor Society and the Student Council are working together for the awareness week.
“Each school usually makes up their own dress-up days to celebrate,” Derrick Miller, NJHS co-sponsor said. “It’s a national awareness week, and everyone does something a little different.”
Schools across the nation all celebrate Red Ribbon Week differently.
Duncan Middle School usually runs an anti-drug assembly in the gym, but this year there will be a video presentation instead because of COVID-19 and the need to social distance.
Students can find the dress up days online, or can find the signs in the hallways of DMS. DMS also shows spirit for this week by having the following dress up days:
- Friday, Oct. 23- Spirit Day // Show school spirit by wearing red!
- Monday, Oct. 26- Crazy Sock Day // Wear your silliest socks!
- Tuesday, Oct. 27- Career Day // Dress as your favorite job or career!
- Wednesday, Oct. 28- Hippie Day // Show your good vibes!
- Thursday, Oct. 29- Camo Day // SHOOT for a drug-free life!
- Friday, Oct. 30- Red Day // Show spirit for Red Ribbon Week at DMS by wearing red!
Also during Red Ribbon Week, DMS classrooms will participate in a door decorating contest.
During WIN, student will decorate their classroom door. The decorations will need to fit this year’s Red Ribbon Week theme “Be Happy. Be Brave. Be Drug Free.” The classes will have all of the week to work on it, and the doors will be judged on Friday.
