Academic Team is preparing for its first meet.
When the team members first gathered in November, they were struggling to find a place to host a meet because of the situation with COVID-19. However, the team has gotten its first opportunity with the first meet set for Tuesday.
The team will be playing against Lawton Tomlinson at New Hope Baptist Church West. The meet will start at 9:30 a.m.
There are 14 team members on the DMS Academic Team divided between varsity and junior varsity. The team has been practicing since November with the most recent practice taking place Thursday.
Last year, the same meet happened with the Duncan varsity team coming away with first place.
Academic Team sponsor Jenny Sutherland said she feels confident about this year’s team.
“This year, like everything else, is interesting,” Sutherland said. “We have been told by the person in charge of coordinating the academic teams of Oklahoma that a lot of schools went virtual. So, a lot of schools are having to change or do virtual meets or have to do a lot of meets after the new year. Time will tell, I guess.
“But no matter how or when we go about having meets, I am confident that Duncan will do well and go far. We have some of the brightest students on the team.”
The team will go through at least two meets this year. If they do well enough, they could make it to are, then to state, then to regionals and possibly to nationals.
