It’s more more than a week since Duncan Middle School wrestlers participated in the State Wrestling Tournament, but the success remains.
The state tournament took place Feb. 5 and 6 at the Oklahoma State Fairground. The DMS wrestlers left for the tournament left the day before, leaving between sixth and seventh hours on Feb. 4.
This year Eli Ramirez placed third. This has been his fourth year to go to the State Wrestling Tournament.
Ramirez thinks that he could have done better.
Another wrestler who placed was Zoey Powell who got sixth place. She is also the first female to place at Junior High State from Duncan.
Coach Pena said, ‘’It was a tough tournament and it was better for the wrestlers to get higher than their expectations,” wrestling coach Justin Pena said. “I feel like everyone tried their best and I am happy with what they placed at state.”
Junior High State was the last tournament of the season. Wrestling season is now over and it will start back up next winter.
The wrestlers will get another chance to wrestle again in this later season in Grecko and Freestyle wrestling sometime this upcoming spring.
Freestyle is where you can do a lot of different moves and you can’t touch your opponent’s legs while they are standing. You can gator roll and suplex, but those are just two of the thousands of different moves.
Freestyle tends to be more challenging because there are lots of different moves to defend yourself. Both options will be available to the wrestlers in the spring.
