Last week was the Stephens County Junior Livestock Show, and many Duncan Middle School students participated in it.
Duncan Public Schools have an FFA group that raises livestock to show. During the livestock show, they had two days were they shared all their animals. They were at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center from Feb. 22 to 23, where they faced off against students from other schools across Stephens County.
Kailee Slottke, an eighth-grade student at DMS, won first and fourth places in the hog competition. She got first place in Reserved Breed Champion with her Berkshire and fourth place with her Hampshire and Cross.
Slottke showed a a pig for DMS Assistant Principal Christy McIntryre’s daughter, who wasn’t able to make it to the show. She also showed three of her own pigs.
Dylan Harty, an eighth-grade student, also participated in the show.
“It went pretty well and pretty quick,” Harty said.
Another eighth-grader who participated in the Junior Livestock Show was Lilly Dreher.
Dreher won Reserved Champion for Sport Barrow and second place with the pig, too. She got third in her class with the Spot Gilt and fourth in her class with her York Barrow.
All the pigs belonged to Dreher.
Students from across Duncan and Stephens County were able to take part in the livestock show through FFA or 4-H. Students were able to compete in various competitions, including hogs, goats, sheep, cattle and others.
Dreher also took part in many of the rodeo aspects of the livestock show, including barrel racing.
