Duncan Middle School has recently started practicing for their new play “Girlhood: the Musical” this Monday.
Practices are held after school in DMS from 3 to around 5:30 p.m., and students who have any kind of role in the play are expected to be there to rehearse. The play will be performed April 17 and 18 at the Simmons Center. The times and ticket information are currently under discussion, and will hopefully be announced soon.
“Girlhood: the Musical” focuses on a group of children as they are challenged with the process of growing into young adults, with the story following them through their first day of middle school to their high school graduation. There are four main characters. Their relationships with their friends are shown in depth as their personal lives continue to alter the friendships they have.
The show is a fun experience, with many songs.
Courtney Miles, choir teacher and play director, goes into detail on the songs of the musical.
“The show is a song cycle, which is a set of related songs used to form a single plot,” Miles said. “There are a total of 16 songs in the show and they were written by all different musicians to create one show.”
The four major female leads in “Girlhood: the Musical” include Melissa (played by Averie Knapp), Amber (played by Jackobi Lewis), Judy (played by Nevaeh Kamrath) and Morgan (played by Braidin Stevens).
Lewis, Amber’s actor, discusses her role. Her character comes from an immigrant family, and has a rough time fitting in. At first, Amber is perceived by her school as being one of the nerdy kids.
Later on in the play, Amber’s character develops as she becomes one of the popular girls in her school.
