Hard work was rewarded this weekend, when Duncan Middle School took extended time off to celebrate Labor Day.
Labor Day pays respect to American workers and, for many, marks the end of summer. Labor Day is recognized on the first Monday of September and started as a federal holiday in 1894.
Many students and faculty members talked about their Labor Day weekends.
Blaze Black, a sixth-grade student, expressed why he loves Labor Day weekend. Black played in a baseball tournament over the weekend.
“I’m very excited about no school Monday because I like being at home more than school,” he said.
He also gave his voice to why he thinks school should have been out Friday of last week and Monday of this week.
“I do agree with staying home Friday and Monday considering other schools did do it,” Black said. “I don’t find it fair.”
Black wasn’t the only student with plans for Labor Day weekend. Hailey Potts, a seventh-grade student, said she was helping with a fundraiser for Duncan Middle School Honor Choir uniforms over the weekend.
“I was sort of excited for last weekend,” Potts said. “I didn’t have much planned.”
Her usual plan for a perfect Labor Day is to stay at home and read her favorite books, and she got to do some of that.
For Potts, having Monday off was better than having Friday off.
“It would be fun to have this Friday off, but I would prefer to stay at school to learn,” she said.
Another student who was excited for Labor Day weekend was Kenya Flores, an eighth-grade student. Flores said her usual Labor Day weekend consists of staying home and just chilling after a long week of school.
“On most Labor Day weekends, my family and I go down to the lake for a fun family day,” she said.
This weekend, her older brother came down and visited with her family. She did think the weekend should have also included a day off Friday and Monday because other schools got both days.
Students aren’t the only ones who enjoyed the long weekend.
Attendance clerk Gigi Villarreal went to Corpus Christi, Texas, to see the Selena Museum. For Villarreal, it was an emotional rollercoaster, especially since Selena Quintanilla-Perez was one of the most famous fingers between 1981 and 1995.
But that’s not where her weekend ended.
“Last Monday, I gave some attention to my house because there was some need for chores,” Villarreal said.
She was happy that she got a day off from work, considering that this year has been a rough start to school.
Labor Day weekend marks the first day off for students and teachers, coming prior to Fall Break in October.
