The New Year is coming up fast and people can’t believe how fast the year has passed. New Year’s day is always on January 1st, and it began in 153 B.C. in Rome. This New Year’s Day is on a Saturday. On December 31 they are normally celebrated by fireworks, parades, and some New Year parties. Some Believe that is that if you kiss someone, that strengthens your future with them.
In New York City every single year on December 31 everyone gathers at Times Square to celebrate the new year. This is called the ball drop and every one will count down from ten to zero. This ball that is dropped is around 12,000 pounds. They made this a holiday because Janus the Roman God of beginnings, and everyone needs their beginnings each year.
Rodney Strutton, Duncan Middle School’s head principal, explains his definition of New Years Day. Most people celebrate New years but Rodney doesn’t celebrate this holiday anymore: he says, “New Year Is just another day for me, younger me would celebrate but now I don’t really.” He doesn’t think New Year is a special holiday but he does enjoy the time out of work. His favorite thing about New Year is watching football but sadly his favorite team, OU, doesn’t play on New Year. Personally, for Rodney, his 2021 didn’t go as expected; he explains why, he says, “This year was rough. It was extremely challenging because of the direction our society is heading and all the covid issues.”
New Year’s Day is a fun holiday for some people, but for people like Rodney Strutton, it is just another day. This year has flown by so quickly, and 2022 is right around the corner. New Year is celebrated in many different ways; in New York City, people celebrate the ball drop at Times Square and some people just stay home and watch football. There are also many fireworks, parades, and parties to honor New Year every year.
