Things are getting underway for the Duncan Middle School Student Council.
StuCo members have already to met to discuss things they would like to accomplish this year. The organization, which is designed to put students in leadership roles, gives students a voice in decisions, such as fundraisers, dances and spirit weeks.
This year, the Student Council sponsors are Derrick Miller, journalism teacher, and Cathy Barker, humanities teachers. Both said they are eager to get things kicked off.
“ I am very excited about the school dance in October,” Miller said.
He said he hopes this year’s Student Council officers and representatives will continue to work to make the school even better.
“The change they make leaves a positive impact on the many years to come at Duncan middle school,” Miller said.
Lucy Spoering, Student Council secretary, she is looking forward to many things this week. She said she would like to make Pajama Day a part of the school’s spirit week dress-up days this year.
Spoering isn’t the only officer excited about Student Council this year.
Ellie Peterson, Student Council president, said she wanted to be president so she could lead people, conduct meetings and plan cool things for Duncan Middle School, such as spirit week. She also likes working with peers and helping out as much as she can.
Peterson likes to participate in school sports and any kind of academic opportunities. She also loves spending time with her family and making fun memories. And she likes getting to be a part of something bigger than herself.
That’s where Student Council comes in.
“Success to me means to work hard for the things you want,” Peterson said.
The student-led organization is responsible for many of the school-sanctioned events, including Red Ribbon Week in October and the dodgeball tournament in May.
