I believe the new dress code for this year is better and more practical than in the past years but still not completely fair.
For example, the rule on shorts says that all shorts must come to your middle knuckle on your middle finger or below. Now this seems like a reasonable rule, but what if somebody has really long arms and their middle knuckle is lower than someone with shorter arms. In that situation the two people could be wearing the same pair of shorts, but one would be acceptable and the other would not, simply because of the length of each person’s arms.
But I don’t feel that last year’s rule, fingertip length, is fair either, for the same reasons that I don’t believe the middle knuckle rule is fair.
I think on shorts we should have a certain inseam requirement and dress code should be based on that. Because if we have the rule that shorts must come to mid-thigh, that’s not fair to people who have longer legs.
If they are wearing the same pair of shorts as someone with shorter legs then the shorts will look shorter on them because of the length of their legs. But if we have a specific length that the inseam has to be people don’t have to worry about the length of their arms or legs affecting the way their clothes look on them and being judged on whether it’s “appropriate” or not.
So I feel that we need to make a few adjustments to the dress code, but it has definitely had some rethinking that is beneficial and helpful to the students.
Overall I agree with the dress code, I just believe that some things should be changed to fit everyone and not just standard fingertip length.
