Duncan Middle School is gearing up for its second dance of the school year.
This time around, the theme is “Mardi Gras.”
Last semester, the DMS Student Council headed up the dance, which had the theme “Monster Bash.” Last year, the school only had one dance, and it was the first dance in about three years.
For this dance, National Junior Honor Society will host, and the dance will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 24 in the middle school gym.
Cathy Barker is one of the NJHS sponsors and is among the people planning the dance.
“Mr. (Derrick) Miller and I came up with this theme,” Barker said. “We usually try to switch up the theme, and we thought this would be a good theme. I also really like this theme because it is like a fun time in the south and just a large celebration.”
The Mardi Gras dance will have a 5 dollar charge for attendance; the dance serves as a major fundraiser for NJHS. Student Council got the door money for the last dance. NJHS ran a concession stand during the last dance.
“Student council will be working concession, and NJHS will be working commission so that they can both make money for their fundraisers,” Barker said.
NJHS sponsor Derrick Miller is also helping plan for the dance.
“The main reason NJHS, as well as StuCo hosts dances, is because it raises money, and it also provides the students with something to look forward to during the semester,” Miller said.
Miller said the funds allow the groups to do more for the school, students and teachers.
Cebrella Bassham, DMS sixth-grade student, said she is excited about the dance. She did attend the dance in October
“I plan on bringing a lot of friends and having fun with them,” Bassham said. “I really like the Mardi Gras theme because it reminds me of masquerades and things like boas, New Orleans and just an overall big celebration.”
The dance does have some limitations. Student won’t be able to wear shoes on the dance floor. Masks won’t be allowed. And students in ISI or suspended will not be admitted to the dance.
