Duncan Middle School experienced a power outage today during second hour.
The outage, which effected multiple areas of Duncan, was caused by an issue at the Elder Substation. The outage started just after 9 a.m. and lasted about 30 minutes before the power returned in the middle school building.
Because of the power outage, students in classrooms without windows sat outside of their classes.
Students remained with their teachers during this time.
According to a post on the City of Duncan Facebook page, parts of the city were expected to be off longer than others as the city worked to restore electricity.
“Restoration to Elder Substation will be approximately 3 hours,” according to the post. “PSO Metering within the substation is the cause of the outage. Crews are onsite and working toward power restoration.”
Just after 10:30 a.m., the City of Duncan posted on its Facebook page to let people know power was restored to the affected area.
Power to Duncan Middle School returned just after 9:30 a.m. At that time, classes returned to normal with classes rotating out at the bell. Students went to the gym for the weekly assembly in the gym.
Seventh-grader Trent Livingston said the power outage was a change of pace for teachers and students at DMS.
“I was kind of excited, and it was very random,” Livingston said. “There were also people walking around the building and talking with the students and teachers about the power outage, but it was just like a normal power outage.”
This is not Livingston’s first power outage to experience at DMS. The middle school was involved in another citywide power outage last semester.
For seventh-grader Lily Thomas, the power outage disrupted her gym class.
“When the power went out, I was in the gym playing Gotcha, and the lights went out,” Thomas said. “We all were kind of sad that we could not continue our game.”
Thomas also experienced last semester’s power outage.
