Duncan Middle School has seen some changes in its dress code this year. Despite the changes, some students still expressed some concern over the established dress code.
According to the Find Law website, school dress codes date back to 1969, with the groundbreaking trial, Tinker Vs. Des Moines. Since then, students have had their ideas on what the dress should be.
Alice Ramos-Umana, a seventh-grade student, said, “I want other students to be able to wear what they want as long as they don’t show too much.”
As the years go on, the dress code has continue to change and adapt. One of the biggest changes is students being allowed to wear lounge pants and pajama bottoms to school.
Over the past few years, the dress code changed to allow students to dye their hair “unnatural” colors and to have rips in their jeans. These changes have allowed the dress code to better fit modern day fashion.
Jen Carlos, another seventh-grader, said she thinks the dress code is moving in the right direction with the recent changes.
“I don’t hate the dress code too much, but I do wish students could wear hats to school,” Carlos said.
