The deadline for students to complete and submit their CO2 cars is coming up Wednesday.
Right before Fall Break, students hoping to race their CO2 cars in the annual races Nov. 9 will need to turn in their cars. Each of the cars is built from a model kit, which students were able to purchase for 5 dollars. Each kit includes supplies needed for constructing a CO2 car.
Rosie Castle, STEM teacher, is in charge of the Duncan Middle School entries in the competition.
“I guess it’s fun for the students to sign up for it,” Castle said. “The STEM students usually join in on the fun of this activity and even participate in it regardless of the grade they are in.
“It is also exciting because they aren’t the only school doing it, since other schools usually sign up, and it’s fun competing,” She also said. “It can be agreed that even the STEM Teachers think it’s fun for the students regardless of if they sign up. Knowing this, it’s not only exciting for the students but for the teachers as well due to the fact that they usually have a new champion after their own cars fight off in an almost like boxing ring which students participate in.”
The Nov. 9 race will pit each car against other cars entered into the competition.
Although the race is part of the competition, this isn’t the only thing judges are looking for. The cars are also judged based on design of the car and the sketches the contestants made of their cars.
Every student that participates is required to do it by themselves, no one other than them is allowed to build, sketch, or decorate their car.
Although participation in Co2 car races are not mandatory, STEM students can earn extra credit for their STEM classes for participate in the CO2 car races.
