When a student walks into the Duncan Middle School, they see the entryway, running by the office, they see the doors to the commons and this year they see student leaders ready to greet them.
At DMS, student clubs, organizations and sports groups are taking part in a door greeting activity. As students walk into the school, the various student leaders are there to greet them. Door greeters say, “Hi,” to each student and teacher that enters the front door between 7:30 and 8 a.m. each day.
This week, leaders from golf and yearbook are taking part in door greeting. In the past couple of weeks, door greeters have been from the History Club and from National Junior Honor Society.
Jaden Castillo, an eighth-grade student, is one of the students who have helped with door greeting. Castillo helped with NJHS’s week, and this week, he is representing yearbook.
He said he initially signed up to serve as a door greeter because it was an easy way to earn service points for NJHS and to help his peers.
Bella Robison, another eighth-grade student, had similar thoughts about the door greeting project.
“My favorite part of being a door greeter is being able to see everyone in the morning and maybe make their day,” Robison said.
Castillo said he does have some concerns when it comes to door greeting because not all students are receptive to being greeted in the morning.
“Most of the students wouldn’t respond, and I had to wake up earlier just to make it on time,” Castillo said.
Robison said being a door greeter is one way students can give back to their school, while representing different school clubs and organizations.
“It’s a great way to be more active with students and staff that walk in the door,” she said.
