Seventh-grade NJHS officers were elected this month, and they are ready to get started.
On Oct. 3, the Duncan Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society voted on who would fill its slate of seventh-grade officers for the coming school year. These seventh-grade officers will officially take lead of NJHS in August, but they will shadow the current eighth-grade officers.
The new officers include President Peyton Williams, Vice President Peng Zhang, Secretary Kaylee Thomas, Treasurer Ady Cook, Reporter/Historian Kaydence Cobble and Parliamentarian Averi Petersen.
“It feels exciting, but (I’m) also nervous,” Zhang said. “You get to be introduced into new possibilities.”
The seventh-grade officers were elected by a vote of the seventh and eighth-grade members of NJHS. Although many of those vying for office ran unopposed, Williams and Zhang both had competition.
Williams said she is excited to be in her new position.
In her new officer, she is looking forward to handling the responsibility of president, complete with making sure that everyone is getting the news of NJHS and helping others understand the existence of NJHS.
One of her goals is to get more people to join the organization.
Students are selected for NJHS in the second semester. They have to maintain a 3.7 grade-point average, have good behavior, show leadership skills and be good stewards of their community.
Zhang said he wants to be a helpful right hand to Williams during her presidency.
His main goal is to help the president thrive but also make NJHS known as well, but he also wants students to feel heard and understood.
“(I’m looking forward to) helping the study environment and doing my job as the new vice president,” he said.
