Armistice Day better known as Veterans Day became a federal holiday on May 13, 1938. Veteran and 7th-grade History teacher, Chuck Wagner, said, “We celebrate Veterans Day to honor all of the veterans past and present who did and didn’t serve on duty.” In the United States, there is a population of almost 19 million veterans and 13% of those veterans are women.
Wagner said, “Jennifer Owens, one of the staff at Duncan Middle School served in the Air Force for 22 years before coming to DMS. Being a veteran is much more than just serving in the military.” Chance Mayfield said that being a veteran is a great accomplishment and being a veteran is being there for your country in more ways than one.
Mayfield said that it’s an honor to serve your country. Some veterans are not in the army but in one of the branches such as the Coast Guard, National Guard, Marines, Navy, and Airforce. In many states people, schools, and households do different things to celebrate Veterans Day. Wagner said, “To celebrate Veterans Day every year, I give a speech here at Duncan Middle School discussing and telling stories about my time on duty.”
Others may celebrate in other ways like visiting local memorials or as some colleges do, putting out little flags across the field. Mayfield said, “I celebrate Veterans Day by waving my flag outside.” With Veterans Day passing that means that Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year are coming up.
With many events coming up the school is coming up with more plans for the students. For Thanksgiving every year they give students a special lunch that is meant to represent Thanksgiving. For Christmas they have many helpful parents come out and give treats to the students during their lunch. After Christmas comes New Year which is the beginning of the next semester.
