Every year, NJHS holds a toy drive to get toys for kids who don’t have them. Students will buy toys and then bring them to Derrick Miller’s room. People have come together and donated to ensure kids have a great Christmas this year. They recently concluded the toy drive raising over 80 toys for children who otherwise would not get Christmas presents.
NJHS collects these toys and donates them to the Toy Shop of Duncan. The Toy Shop of Duncan is a nonprofit organization run by a group of volunteers. This group is located in Duncan, Oklahoma.
Any student is allowed to donate toys to the cause, however, any student who is in NJHS receives “Service Points.” These points are required to remain in NJHS because a big part of the group is service and helping others out when needed.
Derrick Miller is one of the leaders in NJHS, Miller said “ The purpose behind the creation of the event was to have NJHS be involved in the community, and this was a good way to give back.”
Gibson Brooksher, a member of NJHS, said, “I donated so I could get NJHS points, as well as help the unfortunate families.” He went on to say, “I felt pretty good after donating because I knew it was going to change someone’s life for the better.” Brooksher said that he would probably donate again in the following years.
Gabe Craig is another student who donated. Craig donated to “help out those without the budget to purchase presents.” Craig said that he does plan on donating again, and he does not regret anything because it was something good that not only helped others but made him feel good as a person.
Reid Webb also chose to participate in the donation. Webb’s reason behind donating toys was “for the kids who would be sad on Christmas because they wouldn’t have any presents, however, the points are a good incentive to encourage people to donate.”
George Martinez participated in the toy drive donation as well. Martinez’s reason for the donation was to let kids have a good Christmas this year, he feels they “deserve a good one.” Martinez feels pretty good about his decision to donate, it makes him happy to be able to donate to a cause like this. He says that he would most likely donate again.
