Life Management class was recently added to the electives offered at DMS. This class teaches about daily life skills, such as managing finances, raising animals, sewing, building, and many other things that will be helpful in life.
Mark Montieth is a teacher of Life Management. Montieth said, “My class is about to start the wildlife curriculum, so I will bring baby chicks in for my students to raise.” He continued to say, “I think that it will benefit my students to have these baby chicks because they can watch them grow and track their growth over time. I think this also shows people that raising animals is not that hard. It’s also cost-effective because they can be sold and used for food in the future.”
The plan to raise the chicks in a school setting is to incubate them, and then keep them inside for a while, and then depending on the weather keep them outside or in the classroom and take them out when the weather permits.
He said, “I think that it is so important that the kids in my class learn the responsibility of taking care of animals and showing them how rewarding raising animals can be.” he continued to say, “I honestly also want more chickens because they are one of my favorite animals.”
With this curriculum, students can not only learn how to raise them, but they can also learn how to build the proper shelter for them, the proper way to provide them with the nutrients they need to grow, how to buy and sell livestock, and other things that can be used in life.
He also said, “I would not be able to provide these students with this opportunity without parents, teachers, and other people donating things like incubators, feed, and tables to put the incubators on.”
The class will incubate, raise, and track the growth of around 125 chickens.
