At Duncan Middle School students participate in Read Across America. About 12 students will be attending this event. Read Across America is a national week that promotes reading, and in honor of this holiday, NJHS organizes an event where students go to different elementary schools to read to younger kids to promote learning and literacy.
Derrick Miller is the NJHS sponsor and helps organize events like Read Across America. Miller said, “I think this will be beneficial because anytime we can get kids excited about reading is a good thing.” He went on to say, “I think it impacts their lives because the kids who are new to reading can look up to the older kids and get excited and ready to read.”
Tenley Robison is a 7th grader who will be attending NJHS, Robison said, “I am so excited to read to younger kids. However, I am most excited to possibly get to go to Hoarce Man because my little sister goes to that school.”
Lots of students who are participating in Read Across America have younger siblings who attend the elementary schools that DMS students read to. Having younger siblings that go to those schools encourages some students to participate in reading across America.
Robison went on to say, “I think that it’s important to read younger students because it encourages them to read.” She said, “I think it will make a difference because when I read to my little sister, it makes her happy. So I think that reading to other kids will make them happy as well.”
Read Across America will be on March 8th, 2024. The students will be attending every elementary school in the Duncan School district. Students will be gone for the majority of the school day, they will stop to grab lunch during the day.
