Duncan Middle School resource and elective teachers go to the state capital for a Legislative session. Earlier this month, on Tuesday, February 20th, Morgan Cotanny went to the state capital, Oklahoma City, for a legislative session. Cotanny is one of Duncan Middle School’s resource teachers.
She said, “ During the Legislative session we discussed different ideas the House and Senate are thinking of to cut taxes, possible teacher raise in the future, the states budget, issues in education, and the RSA law.” She also said that she hopes that teachers will get a raise in the future.
At the session, Morgan Cotanny got to meet with all four of the Oklahoma State Legislators. These legislators are Senator Chris Kidd, Representative Brad Bowles, Senator Jessica Garvin, and Representative Marcus McIntire.
Cathay Barker, Duncan Middle School’s Humanities teacher, said “ Earlier this month DMS resource teachers went to another legislative session and we talked about some laws and concerns concerning schools and education. ” These education bills are, Expanding Board of Education – Senate Bill 1395, Private School Student Testing – Senate Bill 1381, Reading Sufficiency – Senate Bill 1906, Cell Phone Free Schools – Senate Bill 1321, Graduation Requirements – House Bill 3278.
Barker said, “ These sessions that we go to are very important because they are times when we can talk to the people who make the laws for education and voice our concerns.” She also said there was another session in Lawton a couple of days after.
Cotanny said “ After going to the legislative session which is something really important to me, I felt good, I felt like I was learning something, and I felt like I was advocating for public education and Duncan Middle School. She also said she is very proud to do such important things that could change the school system and environment for the students and teachers.
