Rosie Castle, one of our STEM teachers, won teacher of the year here at DMS, but now she is a candidate to be district teacher of the year. The other candidates are Eme Sanders from Will Rogers Pre-K, Ginger Thornton from Emerson Elementary, Larra McPherson from Horace Mann Elementary, Angelia Warren from Mark Twain Elementary, Amara Burton from Plato Elementary, Kimi Hays from Woodrow Wilson Elementary, and Toni Howard from Duncan High School.
The ceremony will be at First Baptist Church here in Duncan at 4:15 on Monday, March 25th. All candidates will be getting the day off, as well as a luncheon. Cathy Barker, the Humanities teacher here at DMS, says that they will also have different gifts from the shops around town.
Barker is one of the people on the committee. She says that the teachers turn in papers and that they are graded on those and their method of teaching. Whichever teacher has the highest number of points gets to become teacher of the year.
Castle says that she is excited to hear who won and to get it all over with. She also says that she is very nervous. She says it’s weird not going to work, and she says, “I find myself thinking ‘What do I do? I’m supposed to be at work with the kids.”
Castle says that she thinks she has a fair chance of winning. She says that she’s gotten overall support and no one has been negative about it in any way. Abigail Lewis, one of Castle’s students, has had her for two years. Lewis says that Castle is good at teaching her class and loves the subjects. She says she thinks that Castle will win TOY. Ean Joy, one of her newer students, says that she is awesome because she puts up with him and his friends.
