“Jason X” is a 2001 sci-fi/slasher film written by Todd Farmer and directed by James Isaac. The film follows story of Rowan LaFontaine as she is frozen with Jason Voorhees in cryostasis . She awakes in the year 2455 and finds herself along with Jason aboard a spaceship, where Jason goes around killing the crew of the ship and eventually getting upgraded with nanotechnology.
“Jason X” is much like “Friday the 13th Part 6″ in the sense of the film being intentionally campy and pokes fun at itself. The film’s core idea is Jason in space and is probably the farthest away from the original movie both in tone and setting, yet is still better than the one where he goes to New York.
“Jason X” is more of a cult classic than truly beloved entry in the “Friday the 13th” franchise, however as both a fan of sci-fi and slasher movies, “Jason X” succeeds at being both.
“Jason X” has some great kills, such as Jason freezing a girl’s face and smashing it against a table and Jason literally screwing a guy on a piece of machinery with another character stating his condition as “screwed.”
Jason himself “dies” twice in this film first getting shot by Kay-Em and getting prepared/upgraded by nanobots (ants) allowing him to keep killing. Jason’s second defeat in this film is when Jason is tackled through Earth 2’s atmosphere by Sergeant Elijah Brodski.
I have seen people express their opinions of “Jason X.” Some fans like it and others don’t, so it’s definitely a more divisive entry. However if you feel you may find this film a hard watch then it’s entirely skippable, and you can go right to “Freddy vs. Jason” if you so wish.
However, I think “Jason X” is a great film in the “Friday the 13th” franchise, at least better than it should be. I think the film has some very good kills, as well as callbacks to older films like the hologram Crystal Lake scene
For what is probably the dumbest idea for a “Friday the 13th” movie, this film somehow succeeds at what “Jason Takes Manhattan” couldn’t.
