Today, new Student Council officers were elected by the sixth and seventh-grade student bodies.
Katie Presgrove, the new STUCO president, has different reasons as to why she decided to run and what she feels is important for the next school year. Jennifer Cobble, STUCO advisor, is excited about the new officers and their ideas for the 2017-18 school year.
“Speeches were really good, I think we have some really good officers for next year,” Cobble said.
Presgrove said she is both excited and nervous, and revealed that she was surprised when she won. In her opinion, the factor that helped her win the most was her speech.
“I want to be a voice for the school and being a leader along with looking forward to the pep rallies and stuff.” Presgrove said. “It was silly and the 6th graders seemed to really enjoy it.”
There are many steps to organize the Student Council activities. Cobble is in charge of putting together candidate packets with the rules and pertinent permission forms along with requirements and the facts about the offices. The students are excited for planning next year’s Student Council activities like Red Ribbon Week, Team Dating Violence, Digital Citizenship and others.
“I have never done anything like this before and figured why not do something crazy and get out of my comfort zone,” Presgrove said about running for Student Council president. “I want kids to feel like they matter and discuss bullying and maybe point kids to follow dress code more along with a few recommendations.”
Overall, the new officers are excited and ready to do what they can to support the student body next year.
